In this science fiction story the future society is split between serfs and lords in a United States caste system.

One boy is in the farming lower caste, but is promoted so that he will take the place of a rich upper class boy in the U.S. Army. This part of the story is about his trip from N.C. to Texas so he could go to officer school. This is about how he was freed.
